The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | Data Meetings

I recently had a phone call with one of my clients, and the conversation we had was so insightful and relevant for this time of year, so I knew I had to bring the topic to the podcast. So, this week, we’re discussing planning data meetings.

Many of you school leaders have decided to meet with your grade levels or individual teachers to have conversations around student data. This is what my client needed help with. I helped her plan her data meetings, and I’m sharing that process with all of you because, when you can predetermine the outcome that you want to create from these meetings, you’ll feel so much more at ease around them.

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | The 50:50 Challenge

Over in the Empowered Principal Facebook group: Emotional Support for School Leaders, I’ve decided to create a monthly challenge that revolves around the theme we’ll be working on for the month. The month of November is going to be the 50:50 challenge, which you’ll hear all about in this episode.

As a leader, there are definitely good times, but you will also face countless challenges. And sometimes, the difficulties you experience will feel like they outweigh the fun parts. But the truth is, it’s meant to be challenging sometimes, and it’s meant to be easy sometimes, and the 50:50 challenge is all about embracing both the positive and the negative parts of leading a school so you can be the most effective leader you can possibly be.

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | Predetermined Outcomes

Our outcomes often feel out of our control, so it’s natural that predetermined outcomes sound like something that’s not available to us. We’re taught all our lives that things happen to us. We’ve been surrounded by people who feel like victims of their circumstances and our brain has found evidence to support this notion. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

I worked with a brand-new client of mine recently, and we did some incredible work on predetermining her outcomes. So, I’m going to share her story on the podcast this week, of course with total anonymity, so you can see where you can start predetermining your outcomes too.

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | Slow Burn vs. Going Big

Why do we naturally want to play it safe? What’s the value of going after the slow burn instead of going big? And why might it actually be safer for you to start going bigger? I’ve been doing this work in my own life in terms of how I’m showing up and what I’m offering my clients, and I think it’s important that all you school leaders really consider these questions for yourselves too.

It’s okay to be in the slow burn, but convincing ourselves of this can be pretty uncomfortable at times. And the same is definitely true of going big and taking risks. But it’s so important to know which approach is going to work for you, especially during such a challenging time for our schools.

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | How to Stay Motivated

As a school leader, you spent so much time working towards reaching the goal of landing your first principal position. You thought about what it would be like and how much it meant to you, and your brain spent a lot of time in that place. However, when we’re in the job, it’s so easy to lose that focus and motivation and start to see everything that’s wrong.

Our brains want to default to what isn’t working, why we’re not good enough, and the results we’re not getting. But no matter where you are along the journey, there are always things you’re working towards that you’re yet to accomplish.

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | Bonus #3 (The Pressure to Expedite Academic Growth)

We’ve talked about Covid not being over, the emotions it’s brought to the surface, and how to raise the morale of your staff. And today, we’re discussing the pressure school leaders are under to expedite academic growth, and why this is the main reason I’m seeing hesitancy around prioritizing staff and student morale.

As nice as it sounds to spend time processing the emotions of the pandemic, there is always pressure to keep kids meeting the educational standards that are set for our schools. But is modeling for our students to set aside their emotions and put academic achievement first at all costs actually helping them? I don’t think it is. So, what can we do about it?

The Empowered Principal Podcast with Angela Kelly | Bonus #2 (Morale as the Priority)

In the first episode of this bonus series, we talked about shifting from the frustration and resentment that so many people are experiencing around COVID still being a factor in how we run our schools, into feeling and allowing the disappointment that the pandemic is still with us. And this week, I’m sharing how to move forward as a leader after you’ve processed those emotions.

Your entire staff is just as frustrated as you are right now. And so many of them will be newer to their positions than you are. Your job is to help them through this. Morale is at an all-time low, so what can you do as a school leader to help your staff process their experience during this challenging time?
