The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | The Value of Trust

This month, I’m taking some time to talk to you about coaching your teachers and coachability in general, and I want to set you up for success in creating your vision for the start of the next school year. So this week, I’m going to help you set the tone for the year by discussing the value of trust.

Having trust in your teachers is so important, and them trusting you is vital in creating the best environment for your students. Trust is an essential muscle that you as the leader of your school need to build up, both trusting others and trusting yourself. Believe me, when you do the work I’m sharing today, the impact it will have on your leadership and results will be truly mind-blowing.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | The Extended Value of Coaching for Your Family

As you’re hearing this episode, I’ve been spending the last month indulging my clients in celebrating themselves and all of their amazing successes of the last school year. They came to our coaching work together to increase their influence and impact as a school leader, and to leave an amazing legacy, but that’s truly just the beginning.

This week, I’m diving into the extended value of coaching. The truth is that investing in coaching isn’t just about you. The immense value of coaching does not stop there. When you lead your community with a managed mind and can step into emotional maturity in both your professional and personal world, the ripple effect is huge and literally everyone around you benefits. And today, I’m showing you how.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | Time and Mind Management

Today, I’m bringing you an interview with one of my amazing clients: first-year principal Amy. This podcast was recorded on the first anniversary of our first coaching session. So, we’re talking about her experience as a first-year school leader with a coach in her corner.

Amy has had the most successful first school year of any leader I’ve ever coached, and it’s a real tribute to her and her dedication to applying the coaching work to her everyday. We coached on even the smallest situations, and it’s transformed the trajectory of her school-leadership experience.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | The 3 Month Plan

What’s the fastest way to feel prepared and ahead instead of behind and overwhelmed? You need a plan where you’re working from the future, taking care of problems ahead of time so that you have fewer unexpected crises to deal with. Planning out the whole year isn’t realistic, so that’s where the 3 Month Plan comes in.

One problem I hear from every principal I work with is that they feel overwhelmed and behind, always trying to catch up. Well, I created an incredible process for my one-on-one clients to help them always feel prepared and like they’re one step ahead of the game, and I’m sharing it with all of you on this episode.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | STEAR 2.0

Those of you who have been listening for a while will know all about the STEAR Cycle. However, we’ve had a huge influx of listeners over the past year, so I’m taking this opportunity to go over it again, this time with some things I’ve learned since I first covered the concept. The STEAR Cycle is my interpretation of the Self-Coaching Model, the idea that our thoughts create our results, not our circumstances or environments.

Some of the things I discussed in the early days of this podcast don’t stand up to the test of time. But the STEAR Cycle isn’t one of those concepts. The process I teach involves managing your time, your resources, and your emotional energy. The STEAR Cycle is going to help you master all of it and make the decisions that make your job easier, no matter the circumstances.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | The Value of FUN 2.0

This week, I’m sharing an episode I recorded around a year ago all about the value of fun. Now, with summer approaching, this is the perfect time to reflect on the amount of fun you’re creating in your life and the fun side of our work as school leaders.

Most people, especially school leaders, don’t prioritize fun, and it certainly doesn’t make it onto the calendar. Sure, you plan fun things for others like your staff and students to keep morale high. But when you can prioritize the value of fun in your own life, so much about the leadership experience becomes lighter, and how you use your time, in general, will be transformed.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | Wrapping Up the Year

Welcome to the end of the school year, and happy summer! Whether you’re officially done with your school year, or you’re so close to the finish line that you can taste it, it’s time to dive into a process for wrapping up the year.

Now, most of you want to check off all the to-do’s, slam your computer shut, lock your door, throw away the key, and run away for the summer. The last eight to 12 weeks of your year have probably felt very busy and chaotic with extra tasks that needed doing, like teacher observations, evaluations, testing, and all the end-of-year events. There is lots to wrap up and put a bow on, but it doesn’t end here.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast | Why Mental Health Matters

May was Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’m taking this episode to acknowledge and honor the intention behind it, and sharing the personal meaning it has for me. I’m sharing something very personal on this episode in the hopes that it helps you understand the value of your own mental and emotional wellness, and the cost of not making this work a priority for ourselves, those we lead, our students, and our community.

At the end of April, I learned that a very dear family friend ended her life. Today’s conversation is in honor of her, and I hope her life can lead to a legacy of normalizing conversations around physical, mental, and emotional wellness for every single person on our campus and in our school communities.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast with Angela Kelly | Lighter Leadership

As humans, and especially as leaders, we are so hard on ourselves. As women in education, we are incredibly critical of ourselves when something doesn’t go as we’d expected. We believe we’re missing something, we messed up, and we’re not cut out for this. Well, this is where the concept of lighter leadership comes in.

I had a realization the day I recorded this podcast around my own journey as an entrepreneur and a coach: our relentless self-criticism is tarnishing our experience of life. We are not letting ourselves enjoy the ride, and it needs to stop right now.

The Empowered Principal™ Podcast with Angela Kelly | Handling the Emotions of Tragedy

As I’m sure you’re all aware, there has been another school shooting here in the United States. This time, 19 third, fourth, and fifth-grade children and two teachers were killed when a gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

As the story unfolds, the details of what this school community has been through are terrifying and horrific. While I can’t offer the right words to take away the pain felt by everyone affected, all I can offer are words and the opportunity to process our thoughts and emotions around the tragedy these kids, parents, teachers, a whole community, and our country at large are going through.
